What is Methylene Blue?
Methylene Blue is a phenothiazine dye with multiple pharmacological mechanisms: (1) mitochondrial electron carrier — bypasses Complex I-III by accepting electrons from NADH and donating to cytochrome c, rescuing mitochondrial dysfunction; (2) weak MAO inhibitor; (3) guanylate cyclase inhibitor; (4) tau aggregation inhibitor (Alzheimer’s research). CAS 61-73-4.
Research Applications
Mitochondrial ETC Bypass
NADH→MB→cytochrome c — Complex I/III bypass for mitochondrial rescue
Cognitive Enhancement
Low-dose cognitive effects — memory and attention in rodent models
Alzheimer’s/Tau Research
Tau aggregation inhibition — Alzheimer’s disease models
Mitochondrial Rescue
ETC dysfunction models — rotenone/antimycin Complex I/III blockade rescue
NO/cGMP Inhibition
Guanylate cyclase inhibition — NO research and vasodilation studies
