What is AICAR?
AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is an AMP mimetic that activates AMPK — the master energy sensor. Phosphorylated intracellularly to ZMP, mimicking elevated AMP:ATP ratio. Activates fatty acid oxidation, glucose uptake, mitochondrial biogenesis, and autophagy. Classic research tool for energy sensing and exercise mimetic pharmacology. Research use only.
Research Applications
AMPK Activation
pAMPK, pACC, downstream energy sensing cascade — dose-response
Exercise Mimetic Research
Endurance gene programs — running capacity, fibre type shift, PGC-1α
Glucose Metabolism
GLUT4 translocation, insulin-independent glucose uptake, hepatic glycolysis
Fatty Acid Oxidation
CPT1 derepression, β-oxidation flux, ketogenesis interaction
Autophagy & mTOR
mTORC1 suppression, ULK1 activation, autophagy flux quantification
